Defend National Disaster Preparedness

6 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

Federal Emergency Systems Are Being Dismantled The United States is facing a dangerous erosion of its federal disaster preparedness capabilities. Key agencies like FEMA and NOAA—once cornerstones of emergency response—are being systematically weakened, leaving communities across the country more vulnerable to floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and other major disasters. Preparedness Programs Abruptly Canceled Critical grant programs intended to help communities prepare before disasters strike have been canceled without warning. Funding that had already been awarded is being withdrawn, disrupting years of local planning and risk mitigation. Emergency response reserves are running low. Forecasting agencies are facing staffing cuts, office closures, and loss of operational capacity at a time when accurate weather information is more essential than ever. Privatization and Political Interference Undermine Safety A broader effort is underway to reduce the federal role in disaster response, privatize public services like flood insurance and weather forecasting, and eliminate long-standing preparedness programs. Some of these actions are already facing legal challenges, raising questions about their lawfulness and long-term impact. Congress Must Lead Now • Restore funding for federal disaster response and forecasting programs • Prevent further dismantling of agencies responsible for early warnings and emergency coordination • Protect public access to scientific data and forecasts • Investigate the legality and consequences of abrupt program cancellations and mass terminations The Stakes Could Not Be Higher Disasters will continue to strike. Federal readiness must not be optional or politicized. Every Member of Congress has a responsibility to ensure the nation is prepared—and that no community is left without support when it matters most. Please act now.
