An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Preserve truthful public education, reject biased history mandate

5 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

I am concerned about the potential impacts of President Trump's recent executive orders related to education. Mandating a narrow, positive-only portrayal of American history in classrooms would present an incomplete and inaccurate picture to students. Comprehensive, fact-based teachings on both the positive and negative aspects of our nation's history are crucial for fostering critical thinking and developing a true understanding of America's foundations and evolution. Additionally, diverting public funds towards private school choice initiatives raises issues of equity and fairness. Public education is a cornerstone of our democracy, providing all children with access to quality learning opportunities regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. Funneling money away from public schools could undermine their ability to adequately serve all students. I urge you to carefully consider the potential ramifications of these orders on truthful education and equal access to quality public schooling in Michigan. Protecting robust public education that equips students with honest knowledge should be a top priority. I request that you take a strong stance in support of comprehensive, factual teachings in our classrooms and against measures that could weaken public school systems.
