The Trump administration's proposed cuts to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are shortsighted and will severely undermine the nation's ability to monitor and warn against natural hazards. Terminating leases for at least 34 USGS facilities across the country, including sites like the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and Alaska Volcano Observatory, jeopardizes critical monitoring capabilities for earthquakes, volcanic activity, floods, and other hazards. Many USGS locations need to be field-based to effectively gather data and issue timely alerts, just like fire stations positioned to rapidly respond to local emergencies. Shuttering these offices puts American lives at risk by degrading our scientific infrastructure for hazard preparedness and response. The USGS plays a vital role in protecting public safety that should not be compromised for perceived cost savings. I urge you to reject any proposed rescissions that would slash USGS funding and cripple its vital work monitoring and providing early warnings about natural disasters across the United States.
