Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to support the Capping Prescription Costs Act (S.529) recently introduced.
Like many Americans facing skyrocketing prescription drug costs, I read
this as critical legislation that would place much-needed annual caps on out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs at $2,000 for individuals and $4,000 for families with private insurance.
It builds on the success of the Inflation Reduction Act, which capped prescription drug cost-sharing for Medicare Part D beneficiaries, extending this relief to the commercial health care market. The reality is that over 60% of American adults take at least one prescription drug, with 25% taking four or more medications.
We all know the effects: Americans often pay exorbitant prices compared to other countries, forcing many patients to skip doses, split pills, or resort to over-the-counter alternatives - compromising their health. A staggering 31% of patients do not take their medications as prescribed due to cost.
By capping out-of-pocket expenses, this bill would provide desperately needed relief for those with chronic conditions and others facing thousands of dollars in annual prescription drug bills. In a nation as prosperous as ours, no one should have to choose between affording life-saving medications and putting food on the table.
This is a moral issue that transcends partisan politics. Peoples health is not a profit center.
