An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Say No to Defunding PBS and NPR

26 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

Public Media Is a Lifeline, Not a Line Item I am writing to urge you in the strongest terms to oppose the proposed rescission of $1.1 billion in funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which supports NPR, PBS, and hundreds of local stations across the country. These cuts are part of a larger $9.4 billion rollback recently submitted to Congress. Local Stations Will Be Devastated If enacted, these cuts would hit local public media hardest—especially rural stations that rely on federal funds to operate. These stations provide children’s educational programming, trusted journalism, cultural programming, and emergency alert services. Removing funding will silence local voices and create information deserts across America. Negligible Budget Impact, Severe Public Harm The administration claims this move will reduce the federal deficit, but eliminating CPB funds would amount to less than 0.03% of federal spending. The damage to civic life, public education, and community resilience would be outsized and irreparable. According to reporting from NPR and The Washington Post, this proposal is seen by many as an ideologically driven attack on press freedom and non-commercial information. Protect a Trusted National Institution Public media remains one of the few institutions Americans widely trust across political lines. Undermining it serves no legitimate public purpose. As your constituent, I ask you to vote against any rescission of CPB funding and stand up for free, accessible, and independent public broadcasting.
