An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Halt the Attack on NIH, NSF, and the Nation’s Scientific Backbone

1 so far! Let’s get to 5 signers!

Preserve U.S. Leadership in Science and Innovation The President’s proposed budget cuts to the NIH, NSF, and other vital agencies would gut U.S. science and research. A 55% reduction to the NSF and an $18 billion cut to the NIH would halt clinical trials, cancel grants, and undermine the scientific workforce—threatening public health, competitiveness, and innovation. Safeguard the Engine of Progress American science has driven prosperity, saved lives, and built national strength. These cuts would halt progress in cancer research, AI, environmental monitoring, and public health. With over 1,700 NIH and NSF grants canceled, essential breakthroughs are being lost—along with thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity. Defend Data and Statistical Capacity Proposed limits on indirect NIH grant costs, recently blocked in court, would force labs to close by cutting infrastructure and support staff. National data systems crucial for health and policy would erode. The ability to respond to future crises would be gravely weakened. Prevent Dismantling of the NSF Mass layoffs and division closures across the NSF are underway, and over 1,000 approved grants have been rescinded. These actions disproportionately harm early-career researchers and diversity programs in STEM—damaging America’s innovation pipeline. Protect the Scientific Future U.S. research institutions face brain drain as scientists consider opportunities abroad. Scientific excellence must be preserved—not sacrificed. The nation must recommit to this proven engine of public benefit. Immediate Congressional Action Required Congress must not stand by while America’s research foundations are dismantled. These destructive cuts and rollbacks must be fully rejected. Immediate legislative and oversight action is essential to restore funding, protect critical institutions, and defend the future of science, health, and economic progress in the United States.
