Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you in the strongest terms, to support FISA reform legislation just introduced that protects Americans' data privacy. The current system allows warrantless surveillance of our digital communications, and that needs to end now.
Section 702 of FISA lets intelligence agencies collect vast amounts of data on Americans without a warrant, simply because we communicate with people overseas. This isn't a theoretical concern. Reports have found that the FBI conducted over 200,000 warrantless searches of Americans' communications in a single year. That's a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment's protection against unreasonable searches.
We need real reform. That means requiring a warrant before any government agency can access an American's emails, texts, or phone calls. Also:
No backdoor searches.
No loopholes for "emergencies" that become routine practice
I want to see you co-sponsor legislation that closes the backdoor search loophole and establishes a warrant requirement for all queries of Americans' data.
Our digital lives deserve the same constitutional protections as our physical ones. Vote for meaningful FISA reform that puts privacy first. Thank you.
