An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reject Efforts To Place Trump’s Likeness On American Coins

Recent reports indicate that the Treasury Department is considering a special $1 coin for the 250th anniversary of the United States that could feature the portrait of Donald Trump. While no final design has been approved, this possibility highlights a serious gap in federal law: there is no absolute prohibition on using the likeness of a living person on the obverse of U.S. coins. To protect the integrity and neutrality of our nation’s currency, Congress must act swiftly to pass legislation that bars the image or likeness of any living person from appearing on any side of any U.S. coin. This action will close the loophole, prevent politicization of coinage, and preserve longstanding precedent. Recognize the loophole in current coin laws Federal law bans living portraits on paper money and prohibits portraits on the reverse of 2026 coins. Yet the statute leaves the obverse side unaddressed. This gap creates a dangerous opening that could be exploited under political pressure. Clarify ambiguous language in coin design laws If this loophole is not closed, the Mint could argue that a living president’s portrait belongs legally on the “heads” side. Such a move would defy the spirit of the law and insert partisanship directly into circulating money. Preserve the long tradition of apolitical currency American currency has historically celebrated enduring values, national emblems, and deceased figures whose legacy has been tested by time. Placing a living politician on coins would transform money into political messaging and erode public trust. Protect precedent for honoring only deceased leaders For over a century, U.S. coins have honored leaders only after death. This practice ensures that recognition comes with reflection, not partisan fervor. Upholding this precedent is vital to the credibility of our money. Establish a permanent prohibition through legislation I urge you to pass legislation that bars the likeness of any living person from appearing on any side or edge of all U.S. coins—circulating, commemorative, or numismatic. Such a statute will eliminate ambiguity and maintain the centuries-long tradition of American coinage. Require Treasury to update policies and report compliance Congress should mandate that the Treasury and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee revise their design guidelines to reflect this clear prohibition. They should also provide Congress with written assurance that the rule is being observed. Safeguard the integrity of America’s semiquincentennial celebration The 250th anniversary of the United States should unite us around freedom and independence. It should not elevate the face of a living political figure. Please act now to protect the dignity and neutrality of U.S. coinage.
