Defend Our Schools: Stop Trump’s Illegal Education Cuts

5 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

Stop the Illegal Impoundment of Education Funds I urge you to take immediate action to oppose the Trump administration’s illegal and unconstitutional impoundment of nearly $6.8 billion in congressionally appropriated education funds. This blatant violation of the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 undermines Congress’s constitutional power of the purse. Harm to Students and Communities Nationwide This unlawful freeze directly threatens critical programs that serve students across the country—including those for English learners, migrant families, after-school enrichment, teacher training, and mental health services. Our schools are already under strain, and this reckless action jeopardizes the future of millions of children, families, and communities nationwide. A Constitutional Crisis The Impoundment Control Act was passed to prevent exactly this kind of executive overreach. The President has no authority to withhold funds that Congress has lawfully appropriated. This attack on the separation of powers demands a forceful response from Congress. What Congress Must Do Now • Publicly condemn this illegal action through all media channels. • Hold immediate oversight hearings to investigate and expose this abuse. • Support and join legal challenges filed by states and educational organizations. • Introduce and pass legislation reaffirming Congress’s sole authority over federal spending. • Demand compliance with the Impoundment Control Act, as was done during the Nixon and Trump administrations. If Congress fails to act decisively, this impoundment will set a dangerous precedent not only for education but for every congressional appropriation in the future. The power of the purse belongs to Congress—not to the President. Full Article Reference: “Trump Administration Freezes $6.8 Billion in Federal Education Funds” — The New York Times, July 1, 2025.
