The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians have a deep-rooted history in Michigan, with treaties dating back to 1795. Despite this longstanding connection to the land, they have been denied federal recognition as a sovereign nation for decades. Granting federal recognition through bills S2160 and HR3255 would provide critical resources and services that the Tribe has been owed for generations, allowing them to better protect their lands and way of life. This bipartisan legislation finally has the support needed to right this wrong and uphold our commitments to Indigenous peoples. Recognizing the Grand River Bands is a matter of honoring promises made and delivering on guaranteed rights that have been far too long denied. I urge you to pass bills S2160 and HR3255 and grant the Grand River Bands the federal recognition they deserve.
