An open letter to the U.S. Senate

Oppose Jared Isaacman for Head of NASA - Scientists not Profiteers

35 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to oppose Jared Isaacman's nomination as the head of NASA. Despite his experience as a private astronaut, there’s numerous red flags that must prompt opposition to his leadership role at the agency. First, his past legal troubles involving passing bad checks to casinos raise questions about his judgment and integrity. While the charges were dismissed, this incident should not be disregarded when considering someone for such a critical position. Moreover, Isaacman's priorities seem misaligned with NASA's current goals. His strong emphasis on pursuing human missions to Mars could divert resources away from the Artemis program aimed at returning to the Moon. In addition, part of NASA’s even more urgent mission is keeping and eye on what’s happening to our own planet regarding the climate emergency. Isaacman doesn’t care about monitoring carbon or changes to the planet’s weather patterns owing to the greenhouse gas effect. It will leave us without the programs and equipment we need to measure vital aspects of our planet’s health. In fact, giving us data about our Earth must be seen as an increasingly important mission. Isaacman is a profiteer, not a scientist. Isaacman's ties to private space companies like SpaceX raise concerns about potential conflicts of interest. As a billionaire with stakes in the commercial space sector, there is a risk that he may prioritize private interests over NASA's public mission and objectives. Given these concerns about his background, priorities, and potential conflicts, I urge you to vote against Jared Isaacman's nomination as the head of NASA. The agency's leadership should instead be entrusted to an individual whose integrity, vision, and commitment to public service are beyond reproach, and not someone to whom profit for him and his cronies is the only measure of the agency’s success. Thank you.
