Maryland's legislative and congressional maps are still drawn by the same politicians who run in them. SB2102 would end that by creating an independent Legislative and Congressional Redistricting and Apportionment Commission to draw both sets of districts, and I want my representatives to vote yes.
Right now the people picking their own voters set the rules for legislative districts and have no binding standards at all for congressional ones. SB2102 fixes both problems. It requires single member delegate districts, tightens the standards lawmakers must follow when drawing legislative lines, and for the first time writes real standards into law for congressional maps too.
Handing this power to an independent commission instead of sitting legislators is the only way to guarantee districts reflect voters instead of incumbents. I'm asking my senator and delegate to support SB2102 and move it through committee.
