An open letter to the U.S. Congress

mRNA project cancellation jeopardizes cancer treatment research, public health

42 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

Prioritize science-based mRNA research and medical progress! The recent decision to pull $500 million in funding for mRNA vaccine development is concerning. mRNA technology holds immense potential not just for combating influenza and emerging viral threats like avian flu, but also for developing novel treatments against diseases like cancer. Shelving this critical research could have far-reaching consequences. It is imperative that funding decisions are guided by scientific evidence and expertise, not unsubstantiated claims or personal beliefs. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have rigorous peer-review processes in place to ensure research is based on sound, replicable science. Any changes to their established protocols should be driven by qualified scientists and disease experts, not by individuals promoting conspiracy theories. Given the gravity of this situation and the approved funding at stake, it is necessary for Congress to intervene. Ensuring that allocated funds are properly utilized for their intended purposes, under the guidance of credible scientific institutions, is crucial for safeguarding public health and advancing medical innovation. Prioritizing evidence-based research over unfounded skepticism is essential for making progress against the America’s most pressing health challenges.
