I am deeply concerned about the critical staffing shortages facing the National Weather Service (NWS). Recent reports indicate that nearly 600 workers, approximately one in seven, have left the agency due to firings, resignations, or retirements. This severe understaffing is pushing the NWS to its limits and compromising its ability to provide essential weather forecasting services that keep Americans safe.
The situation is dire. NWS staffers are working double shifts just to keep forecasting offices open. A 'buddy system' has been implemented, where adjacent offices must help monitor severe weather in understaffed regions. Non-essential but valuable services, such as educational presentations to schoolchildren, have been cut. These measures are unsustainable and put public safety at risk.
Accurate and timely weather forecasts are not a luxury; they are a necessity for public safety and economic stability. The NWS plays a crucial role in providing early warnings for severe weather events, allowing communities to prepare and potentially saving countless lives. By underfunding and understaffing this vital service, we are gambling with the safety of American citizens.
I urge you to take immediate action to fully fund and staff the National Weather Service. Congress must assert its authority to ensure that the NWS can fulfill its legislated duties as intended. This includes allocating sufficient funds to hire and retain qualified staff, upgrade necessary equipment, and maintain all essential services.
The cost of inaction has already been catastrophic. We cannot afford to wait before addressing this issue. Please prioritize this matter and work towards restoring the NWS, and NOAA generally, to full capacity. The safety and well-being of your constituents depend on it.
