Pass pardon transparency legislation now. Require prompt public disclosure of every clemency grant within 24 hours of signing, a clear rationale for each decision, and full disclosure of any financial or political relationships between the president and the recipient. Voters cannot hold a president accountable for pardons they don't know exist.
This is not hypothetical. On September 3, Trump reportedly granted 30 pardons and commutations with zero official announcement. Nearly a week later, 19 of those 30 recipients remained unidentified. We only know about some of them because attorneys and social media posts filled the void the White House left. That is not transparency, that is a cover-up by omission. Among the known recipients: a union boss convicted of bribery and embezzlement, a close associate of Jay-Z, and the former president of Honduras imprisoned for trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine into the United States. No press release. No explanation. Nothing.
The pardon power is constitutionally broad, but it was never meant to operate in the dark. Requiring disclosure and conflict-of-interest reporting won't limit the president's ability to grant mercy. It will just force him to own his decisions publicly. That's the bare minimum a democracy should demand. Pass this legislation before the next batch of secret pardons surfaces on someone's social media feed.
