An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Keep Dept of Ed; NO to HB899

The recent reintroduction of H.R. 899 to abolish the U.S. Department of Education is concerning. This federal agency plays a vital role in setting educational standards, distributing funding, enforcing civil rights laws in schools, and supporting students with disabilities. Eliminating it would undermine equal access to quality education nationwide. Rather than dismantling the Department, we should focus efforts on strengthening public education. Investing in modern curricula, teacher training, school infrastructure, and evidence-based policies can better prepare America's students for future success. Local control over education is important, but national leadership ensures all children receive sufficient resources and opportunity regardless of their zip code. I urge you to oppose H.R. 899 and any efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. Our students deserve a cohesive, well-funded public education system that serves their needs and upholds their civil rights. Defending this federal agency is crucial for advancing educational equity across the country.
