Pass S07717 and Cap Predatory Towing Rates Outside New York City

68 so far! Let’s get to 100 signers!

Please pass S07717. Outside the five boroughs, towing companies can charge whatever they want, hold a vehicle hostage until the bill is paid, and rack up storage fees by the day. People earning hourly wages get stuck with bills in the high hundreds or thousands for a single tow, often after a minor parking dispute they had no say in. New York City has rate caps on tows. The rest of the state does not. The result is a quiet predatory industry that hits working drivers, college students, suburban commuters, and anyone whose car gets pulled off private property. Senators Cooney, Comrie, and May wrote a bill that ends that two-tier system. Set a maximum. Make storage fees reasonable. The Senate already engrossed this bill. Move it the rest of the way and bring the same protections every New York City driver already has to the rest of the state.
