Pass AB 2461 To Make Oil Companies Pay For Well Cleanup
I want my representative to vote yes on AB2461. This bill fixes bonding requirements for oil and gas wells so that operators have to put up enough money upfront to cover plugging and cleanup costs. Right now the bonds are too small, and when a company walks away or goes bankrupt, the cleanup bill lands on taxpayers instead of the industry that profited from drilling the well in the first place. An abandoned oil well isn't just an eyesore. It can leak methane and contaminate groundwater for decades if nobody caps it properly. AB2461 makes sure the companies drilling these wells are the ones on the hook for shutting them down safely, not the state budget. That's basic accountability, and it means California taxpayers stop subsidizing an industry that should be paying its own way. I'm asking my representative to support this bill and stop letting oil companies pass their cleanup costs onto the public.
