The US must honor its commitment to the Afghans who helped us. They laid their lives in the line for us and we must rescue them from the crazed Taliban cult. America has a nasty habit of promising help, patting itself on the back, then tossing that promise into a bureaucratic quicksand that seems designed to say no to these people in their darkest hour. We didn’t know the deep background of each Vietnamese we saved in 1975: the benefit of the doubt was given to those fleeing the country. By contrast, the Afghans seeking our help have already submitted to retinal scans and polygraphs—many have U.S. government-issued badges. We know far more about them than we did about the Vietnamese, but, then again, that was all before the war on terror, which has led to an immoral timidity that rejects Muslims like Sultan. Good enough to die alongside us, but not enough to live among us. Please rebuild our moral strength as a nation and do the right thing.
