Reconsider Job Corps closure, support underserved youth vocational training

26 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

The abrupt pause of the Job Corps program by the Trump administration is concerning as it leaves vulnerable youth without access to critical job training and housing resources. As a decades-old federal initiative, Job Corps has played a vital role in providing vocational education and support services to thousands of low-income and at-risk young people across the country, including over 700 participants in Michigan. The administration cited low graduation rates and high costs in its decision, but the program's positive impacts on participants' lives cannot be overlooked. Leaving current enrollees with limited transitional support not only disrupts their educational journeys but also risks pushing them into unstable living situations. This decision demands reconsideration to ensure our nation's youth, particularly those from underserved communities, have equitable pathways to develop essential skills and achieve economic self-sufficiency. A program restructuring focused on improving outcomes while maintaining vital services would better serve both participants and taxpayers. Abruptly shuttering Job Corps without a comprehensive plan to address its shortcomings and students' immediate needs is counterproductive to developing our future workforce.
